time well spent

A puzzle a day keeps the boredom's away....
So Saturday we were snowed in the looking for something fun to do..
Wouldn't you know that hidden deep in the cardboard of many board games, movies, music, and video games, was an unopened puzzle. A puzzle waiting for someone to take the time to make the pieces fit...Why yes Jack Sparrow came to town!!! That makes me very happy.
So this puzzle went together fairly quickly, with a 10 year old in the house 300-500 pieces are our challenge. We however, are rather competitive and it was a "who's going to solve the puzzle and find the pieces" All in all we had a fantastic time, and it was a perfect fit to a day in the house. We had a hard time taking it apart and putting Jack in the box. We have plans to do another one this week. I found it to be very relaxing and it was nice to have a little music and a wonderful conversation with my daughter.
So, this puzzle got me to thinking about a few things and here you have it... puzzle trivia.........
The 1st puzzle was created by John Spilbury in 1760's. He was a London engraver and mapmaker. He mounted a map on a sheet of hardwood and cut around the border of the countries. This was used to teach British children geography. They was known as dissections, but in that time was exactly a favorite word. :0
Until around the 1820's they remained only educational tools and in 1880 the treadle saw was created and what was known as dissections became the jigsaw puzzle. Cardboard puzzles were created in the late 1800's and not very popular. Wooden puzzles were about $1.00 and cardboard were about 25 cents. They say that the puzzle did really well during the depression. It was good entertainment for a small price and could be recycled, from one family to another.
So given the state of our economy and the state of some of our lives, lacking "time" for one another. Some how I see us back to doing puzzles. I'll bet when I get to Target this weekend they'll be all sold out. Maybe it is time our society rediscovers the puzzle. Maybe we'll rediscover each other and reduce a little stress. It is time to remember the things about our childhood that was fun and recreate some of that for our children. What a fun healthy pastime for these long, long winter months.
Besides I am pretty sure any one of us wouldn't mind if Jack or Will came to visit once in awhile. I just wish they'd make a hot puzzle of my hubby. Imagine all the stress I'd reduce and time I'd spend with that puzzle....
Be warm....-L.
